I just got finished with an Internship at the Avery Research center. At the time of working there I lived at 10 Warren Place, an apartment like dormitory with horrid AC as someone who likes the house at 65 degrees F. I got to see around Charleston and try different Gullah Geechee foods while working at Avery. As someone who doesn’t have a car and had to walk everywhere, I wanna say that Charleston Honestly didn’t seem like all that.
For a place that’s been ranked pretty high for being a good place for tourism I simply couldn’t recommend the area as a place to go for vacation. The streets are walkable but jeez the city smells HORRENDOUS. There’s a noticeable lack of greenery outside of dedicated parks, which is typical for a city, but the lack of trees filtering the oxygen (Lots of Palmettos but those aren’t trees) you notice a poor quality in the air.
I typically stayed in the King street area with the occasional 30-minute walk to Publix for groceries, the area just didn’t seem to have a lot going on. Loads of boutiques along the streets that was a noticeable thing I saw.
All in all I enjoyed the short month and a half while being at Charleston. I think there’s a lot of things I could talk about that I saw within the city of Charleston but in my own opinion I think the city may be just a little overhyped.
I think everyone should visit a place once and gain their own opinion on it. While I think Charleston is overhyped there may be places, I simply didn’t get to visit (being a Rising Sophomore with no car who could only walk so far).
